Our Montessori children have been studying the art of Hendrick Avercamp and using his wintry scenes as inspiration for their own depictions of winter.
"Winter Landscape" by Hendrick Avercamp
Winter Solstice is here and even though the nights are long and dark, the days are already starting to get longer. The light is returning...and here is a song that is sure to cheer you and bring a sense of hope, too!
The sun brightens us all, especially in winter!
"Rainbow Sun" Oil pastels
Trees bring us comfort, even in winter. We can decorate them to light up our days!

"Wintertime Trees" Masking tape technique with Water colors, Markers
Even the snowy scenes are lovely to paint!
We can still enjoy the bright sun on those cold days...maybe even more because the nights seem so long!
"Sun" Oil pastels
Winter rode trips usually mean a family gathering at the end of our travels!
"On The Road" Eye Dropper technique with Water Colors
And we look forward to the longer days and the warmth of the summer sun that is just around the corner!
"Erupting Sun" Oil pastels
Okay, I am a connoisseur of children's art and so I see all its shortcomings as the interesting aspects that make it so magical. But, I think these examples of wintry scenes are so lovely and a great way to celebrate the beauty of winter through the eyes of innocence!
Happy Solstice!
